The Republic of Korea (South Korea) is located in the southern part of the Korean peninsula. The northern half of the peninsula is North Korea or the Democratic Republic of Korea (Communist). The two Koreas were divided along the 38th parallel in 1945 into two military zones as a provisional arrangement pending a resolution of the political conflict in what was previously a single country.

South Korea, officially the Republic of Korea and often referred to as Korea is a presidential republic in East Asia, occupying the southern half of the Korean Peninsula. Also known as the "Land of the Morning Calm", it is neighbored by China to the west, Japan to the east and borders North Korea to the north. South Korea's capital and largest city is Seoul, the second largest metropolitan city in the world.
